How does therapy help? Meeting a therapist who is warm, accepting and non-judgemental allows the client to express thoughts and feelings which would be impossible with family or friends. Sometimes it can be distressing when these thoughts and feelings are allowed into awareness and the therapist will support the client to work through them in safety so that they can be integrated and accepted. The therapist is trained in a variety of interventions which assist the client to explore and work through the issues facing them and facilitate the process of change. Why do people seek counselling / psychotherapy? Counselling or psychotherapy allows us the time and space to explore our feelings and thoughts about the issues confronting us. Many people find Counselling / Psychotherapy helpful during a time of transition or crisis, or when they seek to find meaning in their situation—for example Anxiety / Panic Attacks Addiction Anger Bereavement & loss Childhood issues Lack of Confidence / Self Esteem Depression Eating disorders Fertility Feelings of meaninglessness & hopelessness Mid-Life Crisis Relationship issues Sexual or Physical Abuse Separation and Divorce Work & Career related issues e.g. stress, bullying, conflict What happens at when we first meet At our first session we will talk about your needs and expectations and then decide if it would be useful for us to work together at this time. When will we meet? I have both day time and evening sessions available. We will meet weekly on the same day and time which is mutually convenient and agreed. Sessions last for 50 minutes Can therapy "fix" me? The therapist does not give you answers, tell you what you should do, or "fix" the problems for you. Rather the therapist explores with you feelings and ways of being, choices and alternatives that you identify for yourself so that you gain new perspectives. How long does therapy take? It is not possible to predict how long therapy should go on for. Every person is different, with their own unique life experiences and way of living in the world. Some clients find that a particular issue can be resolved in the short term, in a number of weeks, and have no need or desire to continue. Other clients choose to undertake a longer process where they may engage with themselves at a deeper level and undertake a more in-depth exploration of their personal challenges and way of being in the world. The process of getting to know and accept ourselves – achieving deep and lasting change – takes time. |
