A counsellor / psychotherapist is trained to help people work through these issues. The therapist does not set out to solve the problem or advise clients what to do. Rather, she offers a safe, caring and confidential space where clients are supported to explore the painful experiences they are facing. This allows clients gain insight into how their life experiences have affected them, a better understanding of how they feel and behave in different circumstances; and a clearer sense of how they might move forward in their life and become more at ease with themselves. The person centred approach developed by Carl Rogers emphasizes the therapeutic relationship characterized by the empathy, genuineness and unconditional positive regard of the therapist. This means that the therapist tries to be real and honest with the client as she listens in-depth in a non-judgemental way to gain an understanding that allows her feel as if she is in the client's shoes. This philosophy trusts in the innate wisdom of the client to grow and move forward in the way that is right for that person. |

We all encounter difficulties in our lives at some point! We may have faced difficult events in the past which inhibit us living life to the full, experience a personal crisis of some sort, have difficult relationship or work related issues, or be finding it hard to cope or make decisions. At such times we may experience confusion, stress, anxiety or depression, or find ourselves becoming more dependent on alcohol, drugs or other addictive behaviour to ease our pain. |
